The 2021 adaptation of West Side Story is a musical romantic drama film directed and co-produced by Steven Spielberg from a screenplay by Tony Kushner. It is the second feature-length adaptation of the 1957 stage musical of the same name, and it stars Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler in her film debut with Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, and Rita Moreno in supporting roles. Moreno, who starred in the 1961 film adaptation, also served as an executive producer alongside Kushner. The film features music composed by Leonard Bernstein with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim.
Differences from the 1961 film: Notably, the 2021 version aims for a more authentic portrayal of the characters' ethnicities and backgrounds, and it expands the roles of some female characters.
The film received seven nominations at the 94th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, with DeBose winning Best Supporting Actres. However, the film was a box office bomb, grossing only $76 million against a $100 million production budget, and an estimated $300 million break even target.

Oh, here's why I thought you'd seen this one...I must have seen the title of your post pop up in my feed somewhere along the way and just not noted the date. It was well done, eh? I watched it when I wasn't feeling well and it was a real boost!
Buried in Print. Hard core fans of movie musicals very mixed in their opinions on the remake
