An American in Paris - A 1951 Film Directed by Vincente Minnelli - Starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron

This is part of   my Participation in Paris in July 2023 - Hosted  by Words and Peace

The film tells the story of Jerry Mulligan, Gene Kelly, an American ex-GI who stays in post-war Paris to become a painter, and falls for the charms of Lise Bouvier. However, his paintings come to the attention of Milo Roberts, a rich American heiress, who is interested in more than just art.

The film is interspersed with dance numbers choreographed by Gene Kelly and set to Gershwin's music. The most famous of these numbers is "The American in Paris", a 17-minute ballet that takes place in the streets of Paris. The ballet is considered one of the greatest dance sequences ever filmed.

An American in Paris was an enormous success, garnering eight Academy Award nominations and winning six (including Best Picture), as well as earning other industry honors. It is considered one of the greatest musicals ever made, and is often ranked alongside Singin' in the Rain and The Wizard of Oz.

An American in Paris is a great movie. The minor characters are perfect, it ie so much fun to see the old cars.

My  thanks to Emma of Words and Peace for hosting Paris in July 2023

We went and saw this performed a while ago. It was an interesting mix of ballet and choral.
