Bob Hope portrays the title character, the barber of King Louis XV of France. It is loosely based on the novel of the same name by Booth Tarkington. It is a remake of the 1924 Rudolph Valentino silent film of the same name Monsieur Beaucaire.
The film follows Beaucaire, a barber who is mistaken for a nobleman and sent to Spain to marry Princess Maria. Beaucaire must use his wits to survive in the court of King Philip V and avoid being discovered as a fraud. Along the way, he falls in love with Mimi, a servant girl.
The fun of the novel is in the fast paced responses of Beaucaire to others at Court. There ars beautiful Court ladies and evil figures out to kill Beaucaire not knowing he is a fraud
I see the movie as kind of making fun of serious historical dramas while restoring the spirits of War weary Americans.
