German Literature Month. November 2017. My Plans for the Month

Official Announcement for German Literature Month 2017

“Look at me!” blared the capital of the Reich. “I am Babel, the monster among cities! We had a formidable army: now we command the most riotously wicked night life. Don’t miss our matchless show, ladies and gentlemen! It’s Sodom and Gomorrah in a Prussian tempo. Don’t miss the circus of perversities! Our department store of assorted vices! An all-out tale of brand new kinds of debauchery!” —KLAUS MANN, The Turning Point (1942)

I am very glad to be once again able to participate in German Literature Month.  This will be my seventh year as a participant.  I have discovered lots of great writers through the posts of the hosts and others.  All you are asked to do is to post on at least one work first written in German, whether now translated or not.  There Will be special events and such.

I have ambitious plans for the month, I know I probably will be sidetracked by new discoveries but here is my list:

  1. Fanny Von Arnstein -Daughter of the Enlightenment- a biography by Hilde Spel
  2. The Last Weynfeldt by Martin Suter
  3. The Rings of Saturn by W. G. Sebald
  4. Vertigo by W. G. Sebald
  5. The Silent Prophet by Joseph Roth
  6. The Happiness Bureau by Andreas Izquierda
  7. Who is Martha by Marjana Gaponenko
  8. Goethe-Life as a Work of Art - A Biography by Rüdiger Safranski

I also hope to read works by Hans Falada, Hermann Hesse and Thomas Bernhard

I plan to read some short stories, works by writers such as Stefan Zweig, Alfred Doblin, Thomas Mann, as well as recently published stories.

I hope to possibly reread -all are 20th century masterworks

  1. Berlin Alexander Platz by Alfred Doblin
  2. Auto de Fé by Elias Canetti
  3. The Death of Virgil by Hermann Broch
  4. The Confessions of an Antisemite by Gregor Von Rezzori, 3rd Reading

Please consider joining in for German Literature Month. My great thanks to Lizzie and Beauty is a Sleeping Cat for hosting this event.
