"Madame Bovary's Greyhound" by Karen Russell (from Best American Short Stories 2014)

.

"Madame Bovary's Greyhound", included in the forthcoming anthology The Best American Short Stories 2014, is the story of the life of Emma Bovary's pet greyhound.  We see her go from pampered pet of Madame Bovary, brought to life just as I visualized her, to near feral dog living in the woods, to the pet of a woodsman.  Russell does a very good job of letting us into the head of the dog without overly athrophrmizing her.  I really enjoyed reading this story.

I was kindly given a review copy of this collection of twenty stories  and it looks like it has great reading potential.
